"It is one’s first day of work which determines the meaning of one’s journey in the theatre."
- Eugenio Barba, Beyond the Floating Islands
Actor Conservatory at BirdLand Theatre is a training residency for professional actors to be immersed in Bird Land Theatre ensemble, values and methods.
Performer’s energy is readily identifiable quality. What is interesting is the way this power is molded in a very special context: the theatre. Studying the performer’s energy therefore means examining the principles which performers can use to model their muscular and nervous power according to non-daily modalities.
The purpose of our training is both the physical preparation of the performer and his or her personal growth above and beyond the professional level. BirdLand Theatre Conservatory teaches a way of controlling performers body in order to acquire physical intelligence. This transformational process implies profound commitment, and we see the art of the theatre as a mimesis which surpasses itself.
Our curriculum combines rigorous training in the practical disciplines of acting with the study of classical and contemporary plays drawn from the world repertoire. We believe in training actors who have an intellectual and visceral understanding of dramatic form and who are uniquely prepared to create transformational aspects of theatre.
